Is Vanilla Ice The First Social Media Guru in the World?

Nothing says "1990" better than... shiny, baggy, low-waist pants!

Back in 1990, when email was considered the ultimate mark of uber cool, came along a phenomenal rap song that catapulted its singer/ songwriter into worldwide super stardom.

Reading through the lyrics, I've got two deeply insightful questions for you:

1). Could Vanilla Ice have been the original Social Media Guru without any of us realizing it?

2). Can you read through the song lyrics without falling off your chair, or laughing so hard your eyes well up till you can't read no more? Enjoy...

Ice, Ice Baby - by Vanilla Ice

Yo, VIP, let's kick it!

Ice ice baby
Ice ice baby
All right stop
Collaborate and listen ---------- now's that Social Media 101 for you
Ice is back with my brand new invention ---------- told you, he was onto something
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow that a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop? Yo, I don't know ---------- hold it! Is he rapping about Twitter?
Turn off the lights and I'll glow ---------- Or, is he talking about the iMac?
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle

Dance
Bum rush the speaker that booms

I'm killin' your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less that the best is a felony
Love it or leave it ---------- Could he be discreetly advising the C-suite?
You better gain way
You better hit bull's eye ---------- If that's not about social media strategy, what is it?
The kid don't play
If there was a problem
Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in, the Vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point, to the point no faking ---------- Be authentic. Be real. He got it ages ago!
I'm cooking MC's like a pound of bacon
Burning them if they're not quick and nimble ---------- Now, there's a social business model for you.
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby
Waving just to say hi
Did you stop?
No, I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop ---------- Right there! He's talking integrated social media.
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
That block was dead

Yo so I continued to a1a Beachfront Ave
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rock man lovers driving Lamborghini
Jealous 'cause I'm out getting mine
Shay with a gauge and Vanilla with a nine
Ready for the chumps on the wall
The chumps are acting ill because they're so full of eight balls ---------- ignore them online trolls!
Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine
All I heard were shells
Fallin' on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm tryin' to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene
You know what I mean ---------- SCRM basics - create a feedback channel.
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem.
Yo, I'll solve it ---------- Isn't that exactly what every social media guru says!
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla ---------- Sharp focus on the ICE (Info-Comms-Entertainment) industry.
Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla

Take heed, 'cause I'm a lyrical poet
Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town, that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed
This is a hell of a concept ---------- Could that be a hint for a well-developed content strategy.
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade, slice it like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast
Other DJ's say, "damn"
If my rhyme was a drug
I'd sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it's time to get loose ---------- How to handle a social media crisis!
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem ---------- A guru stays one step ahead by creating what-if scenarios.
Yo, I'll solve it!
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla
Ice ice baby Vanilla

Yo man, let's get out of here ------ Fail Fast. Fail forward. Experiment. Explore. Rinse and repeat.
Word to your mother

Ice ice baby
Too cold
Ice ice baby
Too cold too cold ------ Do you have cold showers in winter? Social media is just common sense!
Ice ice baby
Too cold
Ice ice baby
Too cold too cold

For 20 odd years, the world's been wondering what the song means. What's he rapping about?

My take: I feel Ice, Ice Baby is hard-core, guru-level social media marketing advice - but Vanilla Ice coded it all in cryptic rap (it could be verse) because he was "waaaaay" ahead of his time.

I've been able to decode a few hidden gems :) Can you find or interpret a few more?

"Ice, Ice Baby" remains one of the biggest (and catchiest) rap hits of all time. Word of praise for Vanilla ICE.

Innovation is Madness - A Short Film on Creativity

Last week, I sent out a tweet.

It brought back an amazing film in response. Yup... serendipity does happen online!

It's easy to see why I love this short film. It has my name in the title :)

Humour aside, it features a lovable, eccentric genius called Pliny Fisk III, with remarkable insight:

I love his definition of creativity. But I'm not giving it away. You'll just have to watch the film.

Innovation Is Madness | Mark Decena from Focus Forward Films on Vimeo.

INNOVATION IS MADNESS is a Semifinalist in the $200,000 FOCUS FORWARD Filmmaker Competition and is in the running to become the $100,000 Grand Prize Winner. Pliny Fisk III was one of the founding members of the green building movement. In 1975 he co-created the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a non-profit education, research, and demonstration organization specializing in life cycle planning and design. Shooting a video series for the US Green Building Council, we were introduced and subsequently fell in love with Pliny and his merry band of crazies. CMPBS has not only become a collaborative model for invention, but a physical space for innovation to happen. It's time for the inmates to run the asylum.

Video Inspiration from Kelvin Doe, a teen prodigy from Africa who impressed MIT.

15-Year-Old Kelvin Doe is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours the trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters. Completely self-taught, Kelvin has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.

The Big Bang Theory Flash Mob - Bazinga! It's gone viral...

The hit comedy TV show, Big Bang Theory Flash Mob cast and crew have just created the latest viral sensation (set to 'Call me, maybe') to hit screens worldwide. Talk about having fun on the job.

11 million views on YouTube in 3 days... and counting. Calls for a... as Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the inimitable genius geek among the cast of nerds in the serial, says it best - Bazinga aaaaaa!

Quite hilariously and famously, Sheldon's character mouths off the funniest quotes, very often of a higher, superior intelligence. Here are some of his memorable quotes on the show's fan site.

Happy Diwali - Light a lamp this year. On the inside.

Happy Diwali !!!!!
Wishing you and your family much peace, prosperity, joy, fun and laughter.

Diwali celebrations worldwide start with the simple ritual of lighting a "diya" (earthen oil lamp). It signifies the victory of light over darkness, symbolizing the prevalence of good over bad.

Come... join in the celebration. The best thing about Diwali is anyone can join in. No preparation (or props) required. All you need is a good, clean thought.

This year, take your Diwali celebration to a higher, spiritual level by lighting a lamp inside you:

(-: Your simple 5-step D-I-Y Diwali Diagram :-)

Start with a good thought.
Add some passion (aka fire in your belly).
Light it up deep inside.
Keep the flame burning steady and strong.
If the flame goes off, re-ignite.

There's one way to smile... many ways to light one up. Call it a resolution, self-improvement or a promise you make to yourself. Help an elderly neighbour. Mentor someone at work. Teach someone a new skill. Start an exercise routine. Give back to society. Donate to a charity. Sponsor a child. Feed a family. Save the tiger. Save the planet !!!!! Do your bit. Make a difference.

Faulty as I may be, I have one redeeming feature. I post a Happy Diwali blog ever year:

The meaning of Diwali, the story behind the festival.
If there's anything the world needs more of right now... it's JOY, PEACE & PROSPERITY. Here's a festival that celebrates just that!

Update: Wed, 14 November

Saal Mubarak. (Indian for 'Wish you a Happy New Year')

The day after Diwali (i.e. today), marks the Hindu New Year.
Here's US President, Barack Obama sending out Diwali & New Year Greetings to all in 2012.

Lo! Behold. Genius LEGO machine. Creative Amaze-Balls!

(-: Wanna play LEGO :-)

Did you know... LEGO is an abbreviation of the Danish words "leg godt" meaning "play well"

LEGO is much more than a child's toy. It's a cult and culture among curious and creative minds.

Serious LEGO players - call them Lego architects, engineers, even Lego robotics creators - and hardcore fans are united via forums, websites and services worldwide. Among the most popular is LUGNET - International Lego Users Group Network, global community of LEGO enthusiasts.

What started as a family-owned toy shop in Denmark by the Kristiansens circa 1932 (The LEGO Group is still owned by the same family) is today a household name showing no signs of waning.

Among the most loved brands in the world, the 6 Lego Brand Values: Imagination, Creativity, Fun, Learning, Caring, Quality - have enthused and inspired kids - of all ages - for generations.

Owly Images
The amazing LEGO Brand Framework I found on Jarther Taylor's Twitter stream.

The Most Insane Lego Machine I’ve Ever Seen

The post (in blue below) was originally published by Jesus Diaz, Editor, Gizmodo: the go-to authority for gadget news and digital culture.

Jesus seems a bonafide LEGO aficionado and gadget geek. I loved the sheer energy and passion he's written the article with. Apart from the writing flair, the piece truly carries breath-taking content... The LEGO Great Ball Contraption is unlike anything I've seen. Creative Amazeballs !!!

Long Live Ideas, Innovation and Creativity. Anyway, that's enough chatter. Hit "Play".

Madness. This. Is. MADNESS! Its creator calls this machine the Lego Great Ball Contraption. I don't know what to call it. Gjhiqjmvcdzz. Askjgsprgnyasdkfnipjreg. Thqruwm—-I've no words to describe the awe that I've experienced watching this video. It surprised me at every step. I've never ever seen any contraption so glorious and crazy.

Built in his house by Lego genius Akiyuki over the course of two years, for a total of 600 hours of construction time, the machine has staggering dimensions: 17 modules that process 500 balls for a length of 101.7 feet (31 meters) at a rate of one ball per second. The total size is 5 by 21 feet (1.5 meters by 6.5 meters).

But this is not just about its crazy size. It's about what this thing does. The modules are pure genius. Some of them should have their own video, like the archimedes screw or the basket shooter. Here is the list of modules, in order:

1. Ball factory
2. Zigzag stair
3. Zigzag lift
4. Pneumatic
5. Cup
6. Screw T1
7. Basket shooter
8. Mechanical train
9. Screw T2
10. Screw T3
11. Spiral lift T2
12. Elevator & coaster
13. Fork
14. Spiral lift T1 & step
15. Catch & release
16. Belt conveyor & pinball
17. 5-axis robot S750

It uses every trick in the book. The more I watch it, the more I'm convinced that LEGO should hire him to demonstrate the power of their bricks all around the world. Heck, give the man control over all your inventory, Lego. He's the kind of guy that would build a full-size mecha factory out of your bricks. [Thanks D4rKlar!]

Bonus:

Although no connection to Lego, here's another mind-blowing, meticulously mounted, painstakingly executed shot-in-one-take ad for Honda titled The Cog. (The ad has its own page on Wikipedia!)

Coming back on topic: 'Lego House' - a popular song by Ed Sheeran (also with it's Wikipedia page) carries a metaphorical reference to a Lego House as resilience in life. Really neat track.

Where Lego dreams come true

There's very little that can't be (or hasn't already been) built with LEGO. From pharaohs to castles to... you name it, think it, build it. LegoLand Parks, Hotels & Resorts are where it all comes true.

Virtual Dreams

You can now play LEGO online. Build, publish and share your virtual brick & tile creations over the web. Google has taken LEGO to the virtual world via Build With Chrome.

Sign-off...

The true beauty of LEGO lies in its universal like-ability and cultural connectivity.

Children all around the world love playing LEGO. Some kids never outgrow them ;-)

Just like little Dee who's well and truly gone and LEGO-fied yours truly!

Have fun with content. It's good for you. And your brand.

Fun has a funny way of catching on. When you're having fun, people feel it, sense it and get in on it. It's the equivalent of not taking oneself too seriously. NASA and Gotye get it. Brands should too.

Here's a brilliant, bang-on-brand example from Volkswagen: The Fun Theory.

In recent times, one of the most significant achievement for all humanity (along side the Olympics) has been NASA's Curiosity rover landing on Mars.

While the actual video of the landing (below) went wildly viral, here's the parody with hilarious remixed lyrics spotted on Mashable of the joy that erupted at the base station. It's called:

"We're NASA (and we know it)". A spoof on LMFAO's "I'm sexy (and I know it)".

Curiosity Mars Landing - Full HD Video. Congrats NASA, JPL, MSL on the incredible feat.

In the creative world, a sure sign of success is when your work gets imitated. In the digital world, you know you've made it when the parodies land up on YouTube.

Another example of having fun is Gotye who took crowd-sourcing talent to a new level by creating a "Best of the spin-offs" - a mash-up of all the user-uploaded versions of his worldwide hit song "Somebody That I Used to Know" ft. Kimbra.

The Original Video with 315 million+ hits. Be warned! This song ain't catchy... it's contagious!

Among the better ones of the thousands of parodies that got the whole world to take notice.

Gotye himself took notice and rehashed the online clips into a "Somebodies" YouTube Orchestra.

Korean Viral Gangnam Style + Party Rocking Anthem - LMFAO

PSY's Gangnam Style is now the most viewed video of all time (YouTube official blogpost) - beating Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga - and most probably, also the most aped video in history.

Awesome feat for a song with two known words: "Ohhh... Sexy Lady. Oppa, GangnamStyle!" *

Everyone from Britney Spears to Brian Solis is busting out #GangnamStyle dance moves...

...And I mean everyone! Even Sir Ian McKellen is into #Gangnam... er... I mean Gandalf style :-)

Gangnam style, a LMFAO-style Korean video is now an online sensation and viral super-hit.

A Korean couple I met at an exhibition (who were quite amazed I knew about this video) informed me the hero in the clip is PSY, a popular actor/ hip-hop artist, and "Gangnam" is a happening hotspot in Seoul, Korea - known for its trendy nightlife, clubs - a big attraction for party animals.

The music video shows PSY dancing at various locations in Gangnam. The song’s theme is about “the perfect girlfriend who knows when to be refined and when to get wild.”

Gangnam Style is creatively inspired by LMFAO's crazy, funny, all-time-classic viral wonder.

The above music video was such a rage, it spawned a number of spoofs and mashups. Better known among them were the hilarious, must-see Kia Soul car ads with party-rocking hamsters :-)

Doing the shuffle... Party rockin' in da house... Everyday I'm shuffling :)

Dress Classy. Dance Cheesy.

Why has #GangnamStyle gone so wildly viral? What's the secret to its dance-away success?
According to Psy Oppa, the power lies in the life-style mantra: Dress Classy, Dance Cheesy.

Watch Psy teaching Britney Spears some wicked moves as Ellen de Generes keeps in step.
And here, he brings everyone in the audience to their feet on The Ellen Show a few days later.

* Gangnam Style is easily the most infectious global Internet meme/ Twitter sensation of 2012.
While the video is an online sensation, the song has become a Top 100 Billboard Chart Hit.

  • Thanks to Vanessa Kearney (from Cape Town) for sending the Gandalfstyle pic
  • Thanks also to Dee - great trend-spotting - for sending me the Gangnam style video.

Updated: Mon 26 Nov, 2012:

And now, acc. to this Mashable post, even homes and Christmas lights are Gangnam -ing.

Oppa, Christmas Style! Watch This Incredible ‘Gangnam Style’ Light Show. It is pretty a-mazing!

Aamir Khan as Disco Fighter in Delhi Belly - Shit Happens!

Delhi Belly - a hilarious Bollywood hit film

It's been a heavy week with the phenomenal Kony 2012 story casting a sombre cloud over the web. Well, it's the end of the week. To lighten up, here's a ridiculously funny clip from Delhi Belly.

The song's lyrics: I Love You (like I hate you, hate you, hate you...

Yes, that is Bollywood superstar, Aamir Khan wildly gyrating his hips as Disco Fighter as he sheds some psychedelic blood on the dance floor with an Item Bomb.

Eminently watchable, it's a great way to cheer up a weekend. The movie is in Hinglish (Hindi + English) - a dialect commonly spoken in urban India. Watch the Official Trailer of Delhi Belly.

Clever use of Post-its. Awesome Stop Motion Video.

Caught this amazing stop motion video on Clipmania on Germany's popular Euromaxx show. Found it both, immensely entertaining, and clever.

What is Stop Motion?
Stop motion is an animation technique that makes a static object appear to move via physical manipulation. The object is moved in small increments (and this is the clever, well thought-out part) between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Just like a flicker book on screen!

While the final result is breath-taking, stopmotion is hard work. Hats Off! to all the creative teams.

Click on Play, hit Fullscreen and... enjoy!

Thank You, Clipmania / EuroMaxx for sharing, and Triangle TV for broadcasting it out here in NZ!

Most of all, for caring enough to express your thoughts so I can learn and improve from them.

In case I haven't said so before, I'd like you to know: I value every single interaction we've had (online or offline). I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you from the bottom of my heart. Your love, support, teachings, feedback and encouragement mean the world to me.

It's never too late to say... Thank You!
Many Thanks for making the web a better place to log in.
Until next time, Happy Times on the Web.
Stay positive, live well, smile often and... get social with it!

Thank You for adding value to my life.

Updated: Thursday 22 November, 2012 - ThanksGiving Day

As Thanksgiving is (thankfully!) becoming an international festival, I'd like to share two good ones:

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."
- The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, Robin Sharma

"Happy Thanksgiving to everybody around the globe.
Even if you don't celebrate, take a minute to be thankful.
Oh, yeah...and don't overdo it at the dinner table!"
- Facebook update via Will Smith

(My sentiments, exactly.)

Much Gratitude, Best Wishes & Kind Regards to all,
(-: Me :-)
